Belchertown Assessors Approve Tax Exemptions, Tackle Quorum Gap

Belchertown Assessors approve exemptions and abatements, invoke Rule of Necessity for chair's own vote. The Board of Assessors unanimously approved eight fiscal 2026 property tax exemption applications and two abatement applications, with Chair Loring Caney voting on his own Class 22 veteran exemption after the board invoked the Rule of Necessity due to a quorum shortfall and conflict of interest. Director of Assessments John Whelihan recommended a three to five percent value increase for fiscal 2027, which Select Board member Jonathan Ritter said he would present to the board.
The Sportshaven Mobile Home Park tax-abatement agreement from 2021 remains unexecuted with outstanding taxes and interest unpaid.
