Drug Take Back Day set for Oct. 24 on Town Common
Belchertown will hold National Drug Take Back Day on the Town Common on Oct. 24 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., with police collecting medications and BOAT collecting vapes.
The Town of Belchertown announced Oct. 19 that it will host National Drug Take Back Day on Saturday, Oct. 24, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on the Town Common on Park Street.
Belchertown Police officers and sheriff's deputies will collect unused and expired medications at the event. Belchertown Overcoming Adversity Together, known as BOAT, will collect vapes at the same location.
The event accepts prescription and non-prescription drugs, vitamins and veterinary medications, which can remain in their original labeled containers. Liquids, syringes, IV equipment and chemotherapy drugs cannot be accepted.
Residents who need to dispose of syringes can use the safety box at Town Hall, 2 Jabish Street, located on the main floor to the left of the elevator during normal business hours.
Sergeant Neil Lozier said in the release, "A lot of people have old prescriptions sitting in a drawer and just don't know what to do with them. This makes it easy. And with BOAT out there with us, you can bring your vapes too and get it all done in one trip."
Residents who cannot attend on Oct. 24 can drop off medications at any time in the MedReturn box at the Belchertown Police Department, 70 State Street.
National Drug Take Back Day happens twice a year, typically in April and October. The event is coordinated locally by the Northwestern District Attorney's Office, Hampshire/Franklin TRIAD, Hampshire HOPE, and the Opioid Task Force of Franklin County and the North Quabbin Region.
